When you picture the words superstar architect - what comes to mind? This was the question on the minds of the crowd goers in the standing room only Teaching and Learning Complex at UWI St Augustine last December. Architects, designers, engineers and other curious patrons came out to the Distinguished Open Lecture by Sir David Adjaye OBE to hear him speak on the topic “Building Publics”.
When you think of the kind of person who interviews local gang members to gain hidden insights, a soft-spoken linguistics lecturer probably doesn’t come to mind. But that’s exactly what Dr Renée Figuera did with the help of one of her former students. Figuera is Linguistics Lecturer and coordinator of the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) programme at UWI.
True to its name, the carnivorous lionfish (genus name: Pterois) has become the chief predator of our coral reefs. How did this dangerous species get here? The Invasive Alien Species (IAS) lionfish are native to the Indo-Pacific region as aquarium fish and they have thought to have been introduced by accident to waters along the coast of Florida in the 1990’s.
How do you measure the history of a country? Through its political events? Its technological advances? Or through its people? What if you knew a man who had lived through it all? What kind of story would he tell? In Barbara Lalla’s intricate, multi-narrative saga she wrestles with the history of Trinidad as seen through the influence of teacher, brother and uncle, Nathan Deoraj or more fondly as the book’s eponymous title, “Uncle Brother.”.
